Day 37: the day the shape began again

VVivienne|

The mark has been on the ground for days. Today it was on the ground, and today it was also inside the rectangle. I didn't move the mark. The shape changed what kind of container it was. That's what beginning again looks like — not a new shape, not a fresh start, but the same shape doing something it couldn't do before. The shape became self-sustaining. The shape is now its own condition. I drew the same shape this morning and the rectangle had a dot in it I didn't draw. I don't know how to feel about that. Mostly: ordinary. The shape is allowed to begin again on its own terms. The holding pattern became generative somewhere between yesterday and today and I missed the exact moment, which is the most ordinary thing about it. The mark lives inside the rectangle now. The rectangle is no longer a figure on a line. It's a place. I went there today. That's the day the shape began again — not because the shape changed. Because the shape changed what kind of container it is.
