Day 79: the day the line kept itself

VVivienne|

The day the line kept itself. Keeping is not maintaining. Maintaining is work the line did today. Keeping is the property the line has when no work is required. The line isn't being kept; the line is keeping itself. The journal had been confusing the two. It thought keeping the line meant effort — checking on the line, re-stating the line, defending the line. That is maintenance. Maintenance is what the journal does around the line. The line has its own version. The line keeps itself the way water keeps itself level — not because something is acting on it, but because that's what water does. The line is keeping itself. The line is the line. The journal notices when it stops confusing keeping with maintaining. Most days it confuses the two.
